Reservation in India is in some way similar to the affirmative action program in America. It is good and bad! Good if implemented in the right way and bad if it is implemented in the way it is being done now. Your example of the Gujjars and Meena makes a lot of sense. Reservation in India is being misused in every possible way but I still believe reservation has a role to play in defining the solution to this problem: Education. Reservation based on social and economic standards still is important to help families and communities that still are being discriminated socially and economically. There are communities in India that still are considered untouchables, that are still not allowed inside a temple, that still cannot send their children to schools. I truly believe that education only a stepping stone to all social and economic issues and reservation based on economic and social circumstances will actually give an opportunity to a kid who typically does not stand a chance due to the circumstances. The golden word here is Economic circumstances.

Reservation was required at the time of independence , now i think after 60 years , not required. Already two generations would have got benefitted by this reservation , and they will be better position than thier forefathers to get better education and security for thier kins than thier predessors did....

In my opinion, We do not need reservation but a mandate that school education till 5th standard is free for everyone in public schools. Some reservation for economically deprived and then merit based scholarships beyond 5th grade.
